Focusing on composition in this charming thatched country cottage

Styling and composing on an interior design photoshoot

Styling and photographing a Sean Symington Design project in Somerset

We photographed this thatched family home in Somerset earlier this year. Sean and his team introduced rich fabrics and colour while retaining the charm of this older property and we needed to reflect this in the imagery. The main challenge on this shoot was space. Working in more confined spaces does limit the available angles so we took the decision to concentrate on making sure the vignettes were strong. I like shooting tighter vignettes and in smaller spaces this often means shooting lower so you can include rugs, furniture, art and curtains within the composition. The result is an image that tells the viewer all about the room within a smaller field of view.

Styling becomes very important when shooting tighter detail shots and on this shoot I was working with members of Sean's experienced team. As well as their keen eye for styling, working closely with the designers team is how we makes sure we capture all the important details they have included in the scheme.
