Cover image, the Bath Georgian sitting room

Styling and Composition for a Magazine Cover

The Brief

This image was from a shoot at Sean Symington’s fantastic Georgian home in Bath. The sitting room is at the front of the house and the first room you see as you come in. The rich palette and styling sets the tone for the whole property, stylish, opulent but welcoming.

The Process

The Phillip Jeffries textured wallpaper is the main component of this room. To highlight the texture I made the most of shadow created by the light from the large bay window. The images of this room led to a commission for Phillip Jeffries’ own Christmas campaign.

The Result

When working in a small room I’m always conscious of not shooting too wide, as this can distort the furniture, however in this instance I did make sure I left enough ceiling at the top of the image. This negative space helps balance the composition and the extra height allowed for the masthead/title placement for a Country Life magazine cover.
