Focussing on the fabrics for GP & J Baker

Why square-on composition is essential for the House Small Prints II collection

The Brief

I have been fortunate to work with some fantastic designers and suppliers; but the opportunity to work with one of the industry’s most respected legacy brands, GP&J Baker, has been a real highlight. The brief for the shoot was to capture their “House Small Prints II” collection, a collaboration with Sean Symington. The focus of the shoot was the fabrics and patterns from the series which had been used to decorate the master bedroom in Sean’s Georgian home. I needed to honour the brand’s heritage whilst showcasing Sean’s fresh perspective in this collaboration.

The Process

I discussed the brief for the shoot and the required shot list with the team and GP&J Baker prior to the shoot. We discussed the importance of colour grading and where the images were to be used. The aim was to show the patterns and colours in a lifestyle setting but ensure accuracy so they could be used for print and digital brochures. To achieve this I made sure we limited distortion of the patterns by shooting square-on for wallpapers, and making sure we had the verticals for detail shots. Even a slight tilt in the lens could have made the repeating patterns appear wavy.

The Result

The resulting set of images aligned with their brand and fulfilled their brief. They have been used extensively in their promotional materials and social media. While the GP&J Baker Royal Warrant signifies a certain level of prestige, I apply these same technical principles to all the projects I work on, delivering images which maintain the integrity of the scheme’s fabrics and wallpapers.
